    Corporate impression formation in online communities: a qualitative study

    Purpose: This study aims to evaluate elements of corporate communication in online communities (OCs) and their influence on corporate impression formation. Interactive online platforms such as OCs are growing. Companies are discovering their importance and increasingly include OCs in their communication activities. The present study identifies the underlying components relevant to successful corporate communication in OCs, and further explore if and how online community members (OCMs) expect companies to communicate with them, explaining how corporate impressions are formed. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research method was chosen, consisting of two stages. In stage one, seventeen expert interviews with academics and practitioners were conducted, and in stage two, twelve OCMs were interviewed to clarify the concepts and gain new insights. Findings: The study gains new knowledge relating to corporate communication in OCs and image formation. Specifically, the authors identify and confirm important key constructs in corporate impression formation in OCs, namely, relevance of messages, communication style, social context cues, affiliation, perceived similarity, source credibility and interpersonal communication. Furthermore, a conceptual model is proposed on the relationship between communication elements relevant in online communities and their influence on corporate impression. Theoretical and practical implications: The study helps to refine existing concepts of corporate impression formation in OCs. It is suggested that understanding how corporate impression is formed in OCs helps companies to participate in virtual networks, improving their corporate impression

    Educational intervention to improve infection prevention and control practices in four companion animal clinics in Switzerland.

    Infection prevention and control (IPC) practices vary among companion animal clinics and outbreaks with carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) have been described. This study investigates the effect of an IPC intervention (introduction of IPC protocols, IPC lectures, hand hygiene campaign) in four companion animal clinics. IPC practices, environmental and hand contamination with antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms (ARM) and hand hygiene (HH) were assessed at baseline and one and five months after intervention. IPC scores (% maximum score) improved from (median, range) 57.8% (48.0-59.8%) to 82.9% (81.4-86.3%) one month after intervention. Cleaning frequency assessed by fluorescent tagging increased from (median, range) 16.7% (8.9-18.9%) to 30.6% (27.8-52.2%) one months and 32.8% (32.2-33.3%) five months after intervention. ARM contamination was low in three clinics at baseline and undetectable after intervention. One clinic showed extensive contamination with ARM including CPE before and after intervention (7.5-15.5% ARM-positive and 5.0-11.5% CPE-positive samples). Mean HH compliance [95% CI] improved from 20.9% [19.2-22.8%] to 42.5% [40.4-44.7%] one and 38.7% [35.7-41.7%] five months after intervention. Compliance was lowest in the pre-operating preparation area at baseline (11.8% [9.3-14.8%]) and in the ICU after intervention (28.8% [23.3-35.1%]). HH compliance was similar in veterinarians (21.5% [19.0-24.3%]) and nurses (20.2% [17.9-22.7%]) at baseline but higher in veterinarians (46.0% [42.9-49.1%]) than nurses (39.0% [36.0-42.1%]) one month after intervention. The IPC intervention improved IPC scores, cleaning frequency and HH compliance in all clinics. Adapted approaches might be needed in outbreak situations

    Localization of computer-mediated communication and corporate impression on online communities

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the importance of localizing online communities (OCs) and examines how OC members form impressions of organizations that use OCs in their communication activities. A conceptual framework and measurement scale are developed that consist of complex latent constructs. Design/methodology/approach A sequential multi-method approach is adopted with both qualitative and quantitative investigations. Using Structural equation modeling, the research refines and validates the measurement scales of impression formation in OCs. Findings Findings reveal that comprehensive messages have a direct effect on the impressions that an OC member forms. In particular, social context cues are an important predictor of online community corporate impression (OCCIP). Source credibility, affiliation, characteristics and interpersonal communication are all critical to OCCIP, which in turn, influence members’ attitudes toward the company and the intention to use it again. Surprisingly, relevance, timeliness, accuracy and perceived similarity did not have any significant effect on the corporate impression. Originality/value Three contributions are offered: First, the study provides reliable scales for measuring OCCIP. Second, support is given to the conceptual model that links OCCIP to a set of consequences, namely, attitudes toward the company, intention to use the company, and word-of-mouth. Finally, the study is conducted across two different and unique types of OC contexts, stipulating further insights into the localization of OCs

    Methods for sampling geographically mobile female traders in an East African market setting.

    BACKGROUND:The role of migration in the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is well-documented. Yet migration and HIV research have often focused on HIV risks to male migrants and their partners, or migrants overall, often failing to measure the risks to women via their direct involvement in migration. Inconsistent measures of mobility, gender biases in those measures, and limited data sources for sex-specific population-based estimates of mobility have contributed to a paucity of research on the HIV prevention and care needs of migrant and highly mobile women. This study addresses an urgent need for novel methods for developing probability-based, systematic samples of highly mobile women, focusing on a population of female traders operating out of one of the largest open air markets in East Africa. Our method involves three stages: 1.) identification and mapping of all market stall locations using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates; 2.) using female market vendor stall GPS coordinates to build the sampling frame using replicates; and 3.) using maps and GPS data for recruitment of study participants. RESULTS:The location of 6,390 vendor stalls were mapped using GPS. Of these, 4,064 stalls occupied by women (63.6%) were used to draw four replicates of 128 stalls each, and a fifth replicate of 15 pre-selected random alternates for a total of 527 stalls assigned to one of five replicates. Staff visited 323 stalls from the first three replicates and from these successfully recruited 306 female vendors into the study for a participation rate of 94.7%. Mobilization strategies and involving traders association representatives in participant recruitment were critical to the study's success. CONCLUSION:The study's high participation rate suggests that this geospatial sampling method holds promise for development of probability-based samples in other settings that serve as transport hubs for highly mobile populations

    Die bildungspolitische Forderung nach verstärkter Durchlässigkeit zwischen beruflicher und akademischer Bildung hat sich in Beschlüssen und Aktivitäten der Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK), der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) und des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) niedergeschlagen, die u.a. eine pauschale Anrechnung beruflicher Fortbildungsqualifikationen auf ein Hochschulstudium vorsehen. Lernergebnisse sollen angerechnet werden, wenn sie "nach Inhalt und Niveau dem Teil eines Studiums gleichwertig sind, der ersetzt werden soll" (KMK 2002). In einem Modellprojekt wurde daher ein quantitatives Instrument zur Bestimmung des Niveaus von Lerneinheiten entwickelt, das bei Äquivalenzvergleichen beruflicher Fortbildungsqualifikationen mit Hochschulstudiengängen Verwendung findet. Aus den bisherigen Ergebnissen dieser Äquivalenzvergleiche kann ein vorläufiges Fazit zur Gleichwertigkeit von Lerneinheiten aus kaufmännischen beruflichen Fortbildungen und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Bachelor-Studiengängen gegeben werden

    Novel measures of inflammation and insulin resistance are related to obesity and fitness in a diverse sample of 11-14 year-olds:The HEALTHY Study

    BACKGROUND: GlycA is a novel serum marker of systemic inflammation. There is no information on GlycA in pediatric populations, how it differs by gender or its association with body mass index (BMI) or fitness. LP-IR is a serum measure of insulin resistance which is related to changes in BMI group in adolescents, but its relationship with fitness is unknown. The current study examined the independent associations between fitness and BMI with GlycA and LP-IR among US adolescents. METHODS: Participants were 1664 US adolescents from the HEALTHY study with complete 6th and 8th grade BMI, fitness and blood data. GlycA and LP-IR were measured by NMR spectroscopy. Three BMI groups and three fitness groups were created. Linear mixed models examined associations between GlycA, LP-IR, fitness and BMI. RESULTS: LP-IR decreased between 6th and 8th grade. GlycA increased among girls but decreased among boys. At 8th grade, median GlycA values were 27 (7.6%) Îźmol/l higher (381 versus 354) for girls than boys. Median GlycA 6th grade values were 9% higher in obese girls than healthy weight girls. Overall there was strong evidence (P CONCLUSIONS: GlycA was associated with BMI and fitness among in US adolescents. These findings suggest that there are independent effects for BMI and fitness group with both GlycA and LP-IR. Future studies should validate the role of GlycA and LP-IR to evaluate the effects of interventions to modify obesity and fitness in order to improve systemic inflammation and insulin resistance.International Journal of Obesity accepted article preview online, 04 May 2016. doi:10.1038/ijo.2016.84
